Course Selection in Ontario High School: Why Learning Strategies Matter Before Choosing Courses or a Pathway

by Lena Miele, M.Ed, OCT, founder of Pathways to Purpose

Before choosing courses or pathways, students need the learning habits that help them succeed.

Across Niagara this month, schools are celebrating student talent in many different ways. Competitions are showcasing skilled trades and technology, while performances and arts festivals are highlighting the creativity of student dancers, musicians, and performers.

Events like these remind us that students today have many different directions they can explore.

After high school open houses, many families start thinking more seriously about pathways and what comes next for their child.

In my recent blog, I shared a guide to understanding school pathways in Ontario and how families can think about the right fit for their child. As these conversations continue, many parents begin to wonder what those pathways mean when it comes time to choose courses.

With so many options available, it can feel like choosing the right courses is the most important decision.

But there is something even more important that often receives less attention: learning strategies.

Why Learning Strategies Matter During Course Selection

No matter which pathway a student chooses, the same core learning strategies help them succeed.

Students need to be able to:

  • plan ahead for assignments and tests

  • start tasks even when they feel unsure

  • organize materials and deadlines

  • manage distractions

  • recover when something doesn’t go as expected

These strategies are often described as learning skills in school. They are the routines and habits that help students turn ability into progress.

A student might be talented in academics, the arts, or technical fields. But without strong learning habits, even the right course can begin to feel overwhelming.

That is why learning strategies matter just as much as the pathway itself.

Supporting Students Through the Grades 7–9 Transition

Course selection affects students throughout high school, but many of the habits that support success begin forming earlier.

The years between Grades 7 and 9 are an important transition for many students. During this time, expectations increase. Students often have more teachers, longer assignments, and more responsibility for managing their own work.

For some students this change feels exciting. For others, it can feel confusing or stressful.

This is why strengthening learning habits during these years can make such a difference. When students learn how to plan their time, manage tasks, and stay organized, they feel more confident navigating whatever pathway they choose later.

Looking Beneath the Course Code

Academic, applied, arts, and skilled trades pathways all offer meaningful opportunities for students. Events happening in schools across the community are a reminder of how many directions young people can take.

But before students decide which direction feels right, it helps to make sure the learning habits underneath those decisions are strong.

When students know how to manage their workload, break down assignments, and stay organized, they are better prepared to explore any pathway with confidence.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing more about the learning strategies that support students in Grades 7–9 as they move toward greater independence.

These are the same habits I often work on with students and families who are navigating this transition.

I’ll also be leading a hands-on workshop at the Grimsby Public Library on April 16 for students in Grades 7–9 and their parents. Registration opens April 1, but you can email me to reserve your spot.

Every student’s path looks a little different. When strong learning habits are in place, students are better prepared to explore those paths with confidence.
